Premier League release Arsenal vs Liverpool statement after Gabriel Martinelli VAR penalty check
Arsenal’s latest news reveals why Gabriel Martinelli did not receive a penalty after his clash with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate.

During the first half of the important Premier League match against Liverpool, VAR reviewed Konate’s challenge on Martinelli but determined it did not warrant a penalty. The incident occurred when Martinelli was tackled while caught between two defenders in the penalty area.

Konate, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold, crowded Martinelli as he tried to control the ball just outside the six-yard box. Soon after, Martinelli was on the ground, prompting protests from the Arsenal players.

Despite what appeared to be a foul by Konate, VAR officials at Stockley Park, Michael Salisbury and Darren Cann, decided not to overturn the referee’s initial no-penalty call. Following the challenge, Kai Havertz shot over the bar as the ball rebounded.

Frustrated by the decision, Martinelli voiced his complaints to referee Anthony Taylor, while Leandro Trossard and Havertz gestured animatedly for a foul. The Premier League Match Centre, which provides updates on VAR decisions on X (formerly Twitter), clarified that the referee’s ruling was upheld, as VAR concluded Konate had won the ball.

However, Arsenal quickly shifted their focus after Mikel Merino scored just before half-time, heading in Declan Rice’s free-kick cross, which restored their lead after Virgil van Dijk had equalized following Bukayo Saka’s initial goal.
